    2. With the unveiling of the PlayStation 5 Pro and rumors that the long-anticipated Nintendo Switch successor and Xbox Series S | X follow-up are just around the corner, now seems like the perfect time to take a closer look at the future of these companies and console gaming as a whole.
In this week's episode of Spot On, Tam and Lucy sit down to do precisely that, discussing not only their thoughts on the companies current trajectories, but what public opinion seems to be as well. Is the PlayStation 5's $700 price tag an indication of what consoles will soon cost? Are the ROG Ally and Steam Deck reasons for Nintendo to be concerned about the success of its next console? And which company is more likely to release a console with a new "gimmick" if the Switch 2 forgoes introducing a new feature? The pair tackle all these questions and more as they speculate what the future of console gaming looks like.
Spot On is a weekly news show airing Fridays in which GameSpot's managing editor Tamoor Hussain and senior producer Lucy James talk about the latest news in games. Given the highly dynamic and never-ending news cycle of the massive video game industry, there's always something to talk about but, unlike most other news shows, Spot On will dive deep into a single topic as opposed to recapping all the news. Spot On airs each Friday.

    3. It seems that Qualcomm sees Intel’s struggling business as a potential opportunity. The San Diego-based chipmaker has reportedly expressed an interest in taking over Intel “in recent days,” according to a new report in The Wall Street Journal.
Though the report cautions that such a deal is “far from certain,” it would be a major upheaval in the US chip industry. It would also, as The WSJ notes, likely raise antitrust questions. But Qualcomm’s reported interest in a takeover underscores just how much Intel’s business has struggled over the last year.
Intel announced plans to cut 15,000 jobs last month as its quarterly losses climbed to $1.6 billion. Its foundry business is also struggling, with an operating loss of $2.8 billion last quarter. CEO Pat Gelsinger announced plans earlier this week to separate its foundry business into a separate unit from the rest of Intel.
Intel declined to comment on the report. Qualcomm didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

    5. This week, HBO and Max premiered The Penguin, the first spin-off series from The Batman. And while this show is a part of director Matt Reeves' plans for what he calls The Batman Epic Crime Saga, The Penguin was never meant to be the only series to come out of the first film. But while separate shows about the Gotham City PD and Arkham Asylum fell by the wayside, Reeves now says that there will be more spin-offs if The Penguin is successful.
While speaking with EW, Reeves declined to say which spin-offs he has in mind beyond The Penguin. But he did indicate that the next show or shows will be built around some of the ideas that were in the previous GCPD and Arkham Asylum pitches.
"The things that we're talking about [now] are evolved versions of those [spin-offs]," said Reeves. "It's not like that just didn't work. It was like, we need to evolve this. I would describe it less as something that didn't work out and more as something that is still along a path toward arriving at its destination."

    6. It was big news when Krafton announced they had purchased Tango Gameworks from Microsoft after its closure. It was a move that essentially saved the studio and many of the employees that worked there. Hi-Fi Rush, published in January of 2023, was a critical darling. It may have not been the commercial success that Microsoft had been hoping for, but it was a smash hit, literally and figuratively.

    7. TwitchCon San Diego is taking place this weekend and, as always, the platform had some news to share during the opening ceremony. For one thing, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy said the service will offer streamers and viewers who break the rules more clarity over why their accounts were suspended.
Soon, Twitch will share any chat excerpt that led to a suspension with the user in question via email and the appeals portal. Eventually, this will expand to clips, so streamers can see how they were deemed to have broken the rules on a livestream or VOD. "We want to give you this information so that you can see what you did, what policies were violated, and if you feel our decision was incorrect, you can appeal," Twitch wrote in a blog post.
The service is also aware that permanent strikes on an account can pose a problem for long-time streamers who may eventually get banned for a smaller slip up. To that end, Twitch is bringing in a strike expiration policy starting in early 2025. "Low-severity strikes will no longer put streamers’ livelihoods at risk, but we’ll still enforce the rules for major violations," Twitch said. "Plus, we’re adding more transparency by showing you exactly what led to a strike."
On the broadcasting front, viewers of streamers who are using Twitch's Enhanced Broadcasting feature will be able to watch streams in 2K starting early next year. This option will be available in select regions at first, with Twitch planning to expand it elsewhere throughout 2025. Also of note, Clancy said that "we're working on 4K."
Also coming in 2025 is the option for those using Enhanced Broadcasting to stream vertical and landscape video at the same time. The idea here is to offer viewers an optimal experience depending on which device they're using to watch streams.
Elsewhere, Twitch is planning some improvements to navigation in its overhauled mobile app, such as letting you access your Followed channels with a single swipe and prioritizing audio from the picture-in-picture player. Streamers will have access to a feature called Clip Carousel, which will highlight the best clips from their latest stream and make them easy to share on desktop and mobile. The platform says it'll be easier for viewers to create clips on mobile devices too.
In addition, Twitch will roll out a shared chat option in the Stream Together feature next week, allowing up to six creators who are streaming together to combine their chats. Streamers' mods will be able to moderate all of the messages in a shared chat and time out or ban anyone who crosses a line. Creators who hop on a Stream Together session can also turn off Shared Chat for their own community.
Last but not least, Twitch will expand its Unity Guilds and Creator Clubs. The idea behind both is to help streamers forge connections, learn from each other and grow with the help of Twitch staff. Over the last year, Twitch has opened up the Black Guild, Women’s Guild and Hispanic and Latin Guild, and it just announced a Pride Guild for the LGBTQIA+ community. All four guilds will expand to accept members from around the world next year.
Creator Clubs are a newer thing that Twitch debuted last month for the DJ and IRL categories. Twitch says that engagement has been higher than expected. Four more Creator Clubs are coming soon for the Artists/Makers, Music, VTubers and Coworking/Coding categories.

    9. EA Sports has released the launch trailer for FC 25, which is out now in early access for people who buy premium edition, ahead of its rollout for everyone on September 27. The launch trailer is intense. The trailer shows legendary footballer David Beckham receiving a phone call but choosing to ignore it and instead turn up his TV's volume and lean forward to truly focus.
The trailer bounces between footage of the game and live-action scenes showing the dedication people have to the real-world sport with intense, close-up shots of gnarly blisters, a ball-bruised stomach, and x-rays depicting an injured ankle. There is even a quick shot of a player doubling over in exhaustion and throwing up their lunch. Take a look for yourself in the launch trailer below.
21-year-old star Jude Bellingham is the global cover star for FC 25. Bellingham, an English midfielder who plays for Real Madrid, is the youngest star of an EA Sports football game to date, and he'll also be on the cover of EA Sports FC Mobile.

    10. Danny Boyle’s zombie sequel 28 Years Later was shot using several iPhone 15 Pro Max smartphones, according to a report by Wired. This makes it the biggest movie ever made using iPhones, as the budget was around $75 million.
There are some major caveats worth going over. First of all, the sourcing on the story is anonymous, as the film’s staff was required to sign an NDA. Also, the entire film wasn’t shot using last year’s high-end Apple smartphone. Engadget has confirmed that Boyle and his team used a bunch of different cameras, with the iPhone 15 Pro Max being just one tool.
Finally, it’s not like the director just plopped the smartphone on a tripod and called it a day. Each iPhone looks to have been adapted to integrate with full-frame DSLR lenses. Speaking of, those professional-grade lenses cost a small fortune. The phones were also nestled in protective cages.
Even if the phones weren’t exclusively used to make this movie, it’s still something of a full-circle moment for Boyle and his team. The original 28 Days Later was shot primarily on a prosumer-grade camcorder that cost $4,000 at the time. This camcorder recorded footage to MiniDV tapes.
28 Years Later is the third entry in the franchise and is due to hit theaters in June 2025. The film stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes and Cillian Murphy. This will be the first of three new films set in the universe of fast-moving rage zombies. Plot details are non-existent, but all three upcoming movies are being written by Alex Garland. He co-wrote the first one and has since gone on to direct genre fare like Ex Machina, Annihilation and, most recently, Civil War. He also made a truly underrated TV show called Devs.
As for the intersection of smartphones and Hollywood, several films have been shot with iPhones. These include Sean Baker’s Tangerine and Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane.

    11. Lately, Nintendo seems to act like it's a secret to everybody about who is actually making a game. In fact, there is still no official confirmation for The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom's developer, even though it comes out next week. But, a new report points to a familiar name working on the game.
According to Eurogamer, Grezzo is apparently the studio behind The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. This was reportedly spotted by people who have preordered the Switch exclusive, like Naruki on X. Previously, the developer worked on The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. Grezzo also has created games outside the Zelda franchise, such as Ever Oasis on 3DS and Jet Dragon on iOS.
This is not the first time Nintendo has kept things quiet about what team is actually working on one of its first-party games. For instance, it's still unknown who's developing Mario & Luigi: Brothership for Switch. The original team behind the RPG series was Alpha Dream, which went bankrupt in 2019 and shuttered afterward.
