New recruit for Great Boulder makes immediate impact in team’s victory against Lake View

New Great Boulder recruit Waqar ali Ahmed has made an immediate impact with both bat and ball as his team notched up a five-wicket win against Lake View in the opening round of the 2024-25 Eastern Goldfields Cricket Association A-grade competition.

Waqar belted 71 runs off just 54 balls from the No.4 position after having earlier taken two wickets with his right-arm spin, including the key wicket of Lake View’s Ash Malec.

Waqar’s innings at Wallace Park on Saturday included seven fours and four sixes, and his 84-run partnership with No.5 batter Brock Reilly (20 runs off 32 balls; three fours) was the crucial one that got Great Boulder to 5-147 off 22 overs, past Lake View’s total of 144 all out in 42.3 overs.

The opening battle of the season between Two Blues left-arm paceman Josh Rushmore and hard-hitting Lake View opening batter Matt Carter was short-lived, with Rushmore earning decisive first-up honours by having Carter caught out for three runs.

It was then the turn of another new Great Boulder recruit, Prash Nagaraja — who had come across from Lake View — to make an impression, dismissing Luke Gilfillan (18 runs off 39 balls; three fours) caught behind and then knocking over Lake View captain David Forrest for a golden duck.

No.3 batter Malec anchored the innings for Lake View, and had smashed Waqar over mid-wicket for six before chipping the ball back to the bowler on the next ball to be out for 36 runs off 59 balls.

Mark Williams (23 runs off 47 balls; two fours) and Corey Yeo (15 off 28; one four) made contributions in the lower order for Lake View.

Rushmore finished with 3-13 off 7.3 overs, Nagaraja’s figures were 2-27 off seven overs, Daniel Colling had 2-14 off six overs, and Waqar took 2-41 off 10 overs.

Shane Wood was the best of the Lake View bowlers with 2-13 off five overs, and Yeo contributed 2-22 off four overs.
