The Cleveland Browns are making a move to the suburbs.

Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb announced Thursday that the Haslam Sports Group appears committed to relocating from Huntington Bank Field in downtown Cleveland to Brook Park, a suburb.

Bibb said alternatives were presented to the organization in an effort to keep the team playing in Cleveland, but they decided to explore other options.

“I am deeply disappointed that, despite our exhaustive efforts, the Haslam Sports Group is choosing to pursue a move to Brook Park,” he said in a prepared statement.

The Browns’ lease at Huntington Bank Field expires in 2028 and significant renovations are needed. Dee and Jimmy Haslam, the owners of the Haslam Sports Group, said the choice to move out of Cleveland ended up making more sense for the organization.

“We’ve learned through our exhaustive work that renovating our current stadium will simply not solve many operational issues and would be a short-term approach,” they said in a prepared statement. “With more time to reflect, we have also realized that without a dome, we will not attract the type of large-scale events and year-round activity to justify the magnitude of this public-private partnership.”
