West Coast Vs Fremantle: Fans flock to Leederville Oval for high-stakes Telethon derby clash

In the biggest game of AFLW that Western Australia has ever seen, cross-town rivals West Coast and Fremantle met on Saturday for an even bigger cause — supporting Telethon in their western derby.

Dockers and Eagles fans packed out Sullivan Logistics Stadium for the clash, with 6047 people cramming into the Leederville venue.

Touted as the most high-stakes derby in the history of the women’s competition, the Dockers ran away with 23-point victory extending their perfect derby record to 7-0.

The stadium’s Oval terraces were filled with Telethon activations, including fun football games, face painting and the chance to have a photo with an actual eagle.

Pre-game, the surrounding streets were lined with purple and white and blue and gold scarves, the suburb a buzz of activity and excitement ahead of the clash.

West Coast All-Australian Jake Waterman was spotted signing autographs and Fremantle midfielder Nathan O’Driscoll was in the crowd supporting his sister, Dockers defender Emma O’Driscoll.

There was a strong Irish contingency in the crowd with the family of all five Dockers Irish stars — Aisling McCarthy, Joanne Cregg, Aine Tighe, Orlagh Lally and Amy Mullholand — making the trip from Ireland to support their daughters.

Nora Lally said seeing her daughter play live, and kick the winning goal, was fantastic.

“We normally have to wake up at all hours of the morning to see her play, 3am or 5am whatever time it’s on we watch, it was amazing to see her out there,” she said.

It comes as part of an action-packed Telethon weekend, with some of Australia’s biggest celebrities coming together for the cause.
