Bridge malfunction + Friday traffic + Cruisin’ The Coast = a big mess in South Mississippi

The Fort Bayou Drawbridge in Ocean Springs closed Friday afternoon because of an electrical malfunction, the Mississippi Department of Transportation said.

The malfunction is causing traffic during an already-busy week of Crusin’ the Coast. MDOT asked drivers in Ocean Springs to avoid the area and take a different route.

Traffic backed up before 4 p.m. on both sides of the bridge, an MDOT traffic map showed. The bridge is stuck open, the City of Ocean Springs said on Facebook.

It was not immediately clear what caused the electrical issue, Anna Ehrgott, a spokesperson for MDOT, said. She said a crew was on the way at 3:50 p.m.

MDOT said at 3:20 p.m. that delays would last another hour.

Friday’s malfunction was the latest in recent months. The bridge also became stuck open on Memorial Day and slowed nearby traffic for several hours before crews repaired the malfunction and reopened the bridge.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
