A man failed in his bid to rob an Erie Domino’s Pizza location late Thursday afternoon when his weapon of choice thwarted his effort to obtain a little dough, according to city police.

The attempted robbery was reported on Thursday at about 4:45 p.m. at the Domino’s at 51 W. 14th St. According to police, a man walked into the pizzeria and placed an order before going behind the counter, brandishing a weapon and demanding money.

A store employee noticed the robber’s weapon was a drill wrapped in a plastic bag and pushed the man away, and the suspect fled the pizzeria without any money, Deputy Chief Rick Lorah said Friday.

Police are hunting for a suspect who was described as a slim male who was 25 to 35 years old, 5 feet 5 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall, and wearing dark clothing. Major crimes detectives are following up on the incident, Lorah said.

Erie police have seen such an unusual weapon before.

On the evening of Sept. 5, police were called to the Kwik Fill at 1101 East Lake Road on a report of a robbery and learned that a man armed with what was believed to be a handgun grabbed a cash register cash drawer from the store and fled.

Officers who searched areas around the Kwik Fill after the robbery said they found a backpack similar to the one the robber was wearing, a cash register drawer and a cordless drill investigators suspect was the weapon used in the robbery.

That robbery remains under investigation. Lorah said Friday that police are looking into whether the two incidents are possibly connected.
