How do you cook eggs? Gen Z shun fried and boiled eggs as younger people opt for fancier options

Fried and boiled eggs are in danger of being consigned to breakfast history with younger generations opting for poaching as well as more exotic recipes to start the day, according to a new survey.

Other trendy ways Gen Z are cooking their eggs include adding them to smashed avocados (20 per cent) and cooking up breakfast burritos (20 per cent), or egg white frittatas with spinach (18 per cent).

While 20 per cent now prefer to gently fold their eggs rather than scramble them, the method is said to create a more Instagram-friendly aesthetic, according to the poll.

Regardless of how you cook them, the average Brit eats five eggs a week — with Gen Z consuming the most at six per week, while boomers eat an average of four.

More than a quarter (28 per cent) of those surveyed only buy free-range eggs, while 52 per cent are more conscious in recent years of buying good quality and 41 per cent like to know exactly where their eggs come from.

Overall, 38 per cent of all ages polled said there are many more ways to cook eggs these days, while 28 per cent are looking for healthier ways to cook them.

A quarter (25 per cent) feel the rise of ‘brunch’ has made eggs more fashionable, while one in 10 like to take pics of their breakfast eggs to add to social media and one in four (25 per cent) believe the more golden the yolk looks, the better the quality of the egg.

Bex Tonks, CEO of St. Ewe Free Range Eggs, commissioned the survey of 2,000 Brits, said: “Eggs are so much more than a breakfast staple; they’ve become a canvas for culinary creativity!”

“As the stats show, Gen Z is really celebrating the humble egg, inspiring us all to explore delicious new ways to enjoy their highly nutritional benefits.”
