In this video, they revealed the creative process of bringing James Sunderland to life, coupled with some fascinating details. After watching the video, players feel more connected not only to the game’s world but also to James, who is not a traditional hero. He is just an ordinary man, who is simply investigating the details of the letter written by his late wife (hoping to find her alive).

Bloober Team’s approach to bringing James Sunderland to life was refreshingly grounded. Even though James is the protagonist of this haunting narrative, developers consciously avoided a flashy character design, as in the game’s world, he is just an office worker.

This choice helped James’ character resonate and connect with players on a personal level. Players can see the developer’s dedication towards attention to detail as James sports three days of facial hair, and as the player progresses in the story his facial expression changes his growing fatigue (even his clothes get dirtier), small details that instantly humanize him.

To further cement this realism, the team studied the movements and actions of ordinary people rather than relying on the physicality of professional stunt artists often seen in video game characters. This is evident as James’s posture is deliberately hunched, reflecting a man who is burdened by grief and confusion rather than a trained fighter or an action hero. In the video, Jakub Zych, Senior 3D animator, said:

He’s not someone that is very experienced with combat or like parkour. So we usually use references of videos of Just normal people.

This statement shows that the developers understood that to effectively convey the grief and tiredness James is feeling, they needed to capture genuine human behavior in their animation and design processes. That’s why they extensively studied the video recordings of normal people. It’s no wonder why the game is catching the attention of the players worldwide.
