5 Times Veteran Devs Proved They Weren’t a One Trick Pony With Genre-Breaking Switchups

When it comes to game development, variety is always a blessing and a sight to see, especially when veteran devs are the ones who are spreading their wings into new genres within the games they are already developing.

In this list, we will talk about a few different examples where veteran devs created a game familiar to players but added a small twist that many players didn’t see coming.

5. Digital Extremes – Warframe

I have included this as the first point in this list as Digital Extremes have done a fantastic job working on Warframe over the past 11 years as it has expanded from a simple game in which players could use multiple weapons to complete certain missions.

However, throughout these many years, Digital Extremes has managed to expand Warframe into numerous different genres, even if only in small missions.

These different missions vary from a horror-based side quest that also touches on child bullying to a mission in which players can pilot their own Railjack to fight ships in space like a space pirate, and there are plenty more missions just like these.

Each of these missions shows that Digital Extremes are fantastic at adapting and creating new experiences, to the point it is even creating its own Soulslike, but what makes these missions amazing is that they are fantastic in the genre they are connected to.

4. CD Projekt Red – Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

When gamers think about Cyberpunk 2077 and its Phantom Liberty DLC, the first things that tend to come to mind are a futuristic setting, mantis blades, hacking, and glitches, both as abilities and issues with the game.

But there is one thing that many gamers wouldn’t think about when it comes to Cyberpunk 2077 and that is the horror genre. This circumstance comes up during the Phantom Liberty DLC in one specific mission called “Somewhat Damaged,” and for those who have played the mission, you will know what I mean.

For those who do not know the mission I am referring to, this mission changes the entire tone of the game as it puts you in a situation in which you are stalked by a machine known as the Cerebus MK-II as it clambers through vents at an alarming speed while also making some of the most unsettling noises possible.

This may sound eerily familiar to some horror gamers, as a similar premise was used back in 2014 for the game Alien: Isolation, in which a Xenomorph tracks the player and attempts to kill them.

What makes this mission so interesting is that it pays homage to this classic horror game and even takes it one step further as it improves on the horror aspect and shows that CD Projekt Red knows what they are doing.

3. Ubisoft – Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands

Now this addition to the list is a DLC that came to Ghost Recon Wildlands, which brought a rather unique character into the game that many players didn’t see coming at the time.

The DLC in question is The Hunt, and it was a DLC that brought with it The Predator from the popular Predator series. Sadly, Ghost Recon Wildlands wasn’t a particularly well received game, and this DLC didn’t help, but as an idea, it was developed incredibly well and could have been a fantastic experience if done right.

As an experience, this DLC does what it sets out to do, as it provides a relatively creepy atmosphere as players are hunted down by The Predator as it moves from tree to tree slowly stalking its prey; it only required a better setting to thrive in.

2. Portkey Games – Hogwarts Legacy

Hogwarts Legacy was an incredibly popular game set in the Harry Potter universe, and for many gamers, this was the opportunity to explore the world of Harry Potter to its fullest.

One of the many things this game did right was using different genres to its advantage to provide a unique game for players to play in. However, there is one mission that stood out amongst the rest, and this was the Haunted Hogsmeade Shop quest.

This quest at the time was a PlayStation exclusive quest that players could access once they progressed far enough within the game, and this quest was well worth waiting for.

Most side quests within the game don’t tend to take too long to complete, nor do they have much of an affect on the player, but this quest changed all that as it took a considerable amount of time to complete while also providing a creepy and haunting atmosphere.

In a game in which you can go to Azkaban prison, fight all manners of creatures and villains, or even learn unforgivable curses, exploring a haunted shop with mannequins that come alive, and even fighting a boss made up of all sorts of items wasn’t something many people expected.

1. Hazelight Studios – A Way Out

Now for many gamers, this title was a gut punch in the most exciting and upsetting way possible. Throughout A Way Out, players are tasked with working together with their friend or someone online as they attempt to break out of prison.

Throughout the game, players will slowly begin to work with each other more and more, get to know their characters, and just generally enjoy the story that is taking place.

Sadly, this doesn’t last forever, as the title takes a complete tonal shift at the end of the game as it goes from a teamwork-based game to a third-person shooter as players are tasked with taking down a drug lord.

And to make this change even more drastic, the game goes even one step further as it then forces players to duke it out against each other using the third-person shooter aspect after all these hours of working together.

Just the story alone made it such a perfect example of how this developer can swap its genre when need be, but the mechanics themselves worked so well that if this developer wanted to make a full third-person shooter game, it could easily do so.
