Is Playing the First Game a Requirement?

The Silent Hill 2 Remake has captured the attention of a lot of gamers who played the original series and who have recently become acquainted with it. Considering that the original came out 23 years ago there might be a lot of gamers wondering if they need to play Silent Hill 1 first.

Or if you are looking to get to know the game’s universe before diving into the acclaimed remake from Bloober, this article will take care of that, too.

Do You Need to Play Silent Hill to Play Silent Hill 2?

Despite the series being dormant in recent times, barring the abomination that was Silent Hill: Ascension, it seems like the Silent Hill 2 Remake is panning out well. The game currently stands at Overwhelmingly Positive reviews on Steam and 87 Metacritic Score.

However, one cannot be blamed for feeling like they’ll miss out on a lot of context if they have yet to play the first game. Thankfully, the first two games have plots that are isolated and completely disconnected from each other.

The sequel is a standalone story and takes place in a different area of the Silent Hill town. This means that players who love experiencing horror video games can very well jump straight into the latest rendition of the 2001 Classic and have a blast.

Not to mention the game’s premise, which is incredibly intriguing exploring profound subjects and the protagonists simultaneously. So, by all means, jump into the game and you will love it.

Should You Play Silent Hill 1 Before The Silent Hill 2 Remake?

It is already covered that it isn’t mandatory to play the first game to make the head and tail of the story. However, there is a reason why the video game series is one of the best if not the best survival horror video game series ever.

The game that started it all for the franchise will always be the first one and while the second one takes things tangentially, it is highly recommended that you play through the first one, too.

That is because to experience the franchise as it was intended to be experienced, one would need to be familiar with the lore of Silent Hill 1. Not to mention, one of the series’ most central characters, Alessa will be introduced and her story will be explored in the first game. You wouldn’t know the first thing about the cursed town in Maine if you don’t even know who Alessa is.

So, unless you are thinking of abandoning the series after only playing the second game (which is highly unlikely), you should play through the first game and then pick up the second one. Also, the first game is only half as long as the second one, meaning that you won’t need a lot of time to complete it.

Now that the hype for the game is picking up more players are becoming acquainted with the game’s universe. Would you take your sweet time to understand its lore and play through the games in release order? Or will you only play the second game’s remake and be done with it?
