Denver one of the worst cities to drive in nationwide: New report

DENVER (KDVR) — Denver is the eleventh-worst city to drive in nationwide, according to a new analysis by WalletHub.

The analysis looked at several factors, including cost of ownership and maintenance, traffic and infrastructure, safety and access to vehicles and maintenance. It used data from several sources including the US Census Bureau, FBI and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The analysis looked at 100 of the largest cities nationwide.

Because the list was ranked from best to worst, Denver was ultimately ranked No. 90 out of 100. Aurora was also ranked relatively low at No. 80, while Colorado Springs came in at No. 53.

Why Denver was ranked so low

Denver was ranked among the worst in terms of traffic and infrastructure, where it came in at No. 87, as well as safety, where it was ranked No. 86.

One of the metrics used for safety was the car theft rate, which is something Denver and its neighboring city, Aurora, ranked particularly high in.

According to WalletHub, Denver and Aurora are tied with three other cities for the worst car theft rate in the country. The other cities were Memphis, Tennessee, Oakland, California and St. Louis, Missouri.

Denver came in at No. 45 for access to vehicles and maintenance, but this category only accounted for 10% of the total score while the other categories carried more weight.
