YouTube Gaming’s Viewership Down 27% in Q3 2024

YouTube Gaming suffered a staggering decline in viewership through Q3 of 2024, according to a recent report published by Streams Charts. It was revealed that the titanic content platform saw a drop of 27% in viewership, despite several events surfacing during that window that should have boosted viewer counts.

There was also a 13.6% downturn in viewership across YouTube Live, despite a whopping 13.1 billion watch hours being recorded in Q3 2024.

Changing Landscape

YouTube might have suffered from a considerable drop in viewership through Q3, but it’s still sitting at the top of the content creation table. In the report published by Streams Charts, it was outlined that YouTube’s market share in terms of content distribution sits at around 66.7%.

Behind YouTube sits Twitch with a market share of 19.1%, which is a testament to how successful YouTube remains in this industry, which is quickly becoming saturated with platforms.

Streams Charts’ data showed that the likes of Kick and AfreecaTV are growing rapidly, with the former platform securing a 15.6% growth in hours watched between July and September 2024. As much as people might hate the platform, it’s now the third most people streaming and content-sharing solution around.

As a whole, more than 19.7 billion hours of content were consumed in Q3 2024. These figures were secured – and continue to grow – amidst a packed esports schedule featuring titles like League of Legends, Free Fire, and PUBG.

It’s easy to see why streaming and creating content is becoming such a lucrative career path for many thousands of people worldwide. As trends are seeing cinema ticket sales drop and streaming viewership figures grow (on most platforms), it’s becoming clear that today’s young viewers would rather watch a content creator on their phone than head down to catch a movie.
