Escalation of violence in the Middle East

MEPs will assess the latest developments in the Middle East, where Israel continues its attacks on Gaza and Lebanon, and Iran has launched retaliatory missile attacks against Israel. The debate with High Representative Borrell and the Hungarian Presidency is set to start around 10.30.

Parliament’s priorities for the 17-18 October EU summit

From 9.00, MEPs will outline their demands for the next European Council in a discussion with Commission Vice-President Šefčovič and Hungary’s Minister for European Affairs Bóka. In their meeting, EU leaders will discuss the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as ways to make the European economy more competitive, and to improve migration management and border protection.

Addressing the crisis in the European automotive industry

After the voting session, at around 13.30, plenary will analyse the challenges facing the EU’s automotive sector, and how to restore the competitiveness of European manufacturers. Parliament’s position will be summarised in a resolution to be voted on at a future plenary session.

In brief

Democratic backsliding in Georgia. Starting around 17.00, MEPs will debate the state of Georgia’s declining democracy with Commissioner Urpilainen, followed by a vote on a resolution on Wednesday.

Russian interference in Moldova. Moscow’s attempts to interfere in Moldova’s upcoming presidential election and the referendum on the country joining the EU will be discussed from around 16.00 with Commissioner Urpilainen. Plenary will vote on a resolution on Wednesday.

Civil war in Sudan. Later in the evening, MEPs will put questions to Commissioner Urpilainen on recent EU efforts to broker peace in a Sudan plagued by civil war.

Votes

At 12.30, plenary will vote to disburse money from the EU Solidarity Fund to Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Greece and France to help mitigate damage by floods in 2023.
