The new-generation Mitsubishi Triton range has grown to include a new mid-range ute with a meaner look.

The GLX-R is arriving in October as part of what Mitsubishi Motors Australia calls the 2024.5 model year, which also sees the introduction of a dual-strut tailgate assist system for the new grade plus the existing GLS and GSR.

The new trim level is priced at $56,740 before on-road costs, slotting neatly between the existing GLX+ ($53,290 before on-roads) and GLS ($59,090 before on-roads).

Pricing for the wider range is unchanged for MY24.5.

Mitsubishi says the GLX-R is based on the GLX, but it gains the Super Select II four-wheel drive system found on the higher-spec GLS and GSR.

This brings a full-time four-wheel drive mode which can be used on pavement, as well as hill descent control.

Like those more expensive models, it also receives the Triton’s ‘standard duty’ suspension instead of the heavy-duty setup found in the GLX.

It also features black-finish 18-inch alloy wheels and a black sports bar like the flagship GSR, though it’s easily distinguished by its different grille and halogen headlights.

GLX-R standard equipment includes:

  • Black 18-inch alloy wheels with highway terrain tyres
  • Black sports bar
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Fully carpeted floor
  • Exterior door body mouldings

It foregoes side steps, but includes the following equipment found on the more affordable GLX+ such as:

  • Black fabric upholstery with silver stitching
  • 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto
  • DAB digital radio
  • Satellite navigation
  • Tilt and telescopic steering column adjustment
  • Locking rear differential
  • Automatic high-beam
  • Automatic halogen headlights
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Driver attention monitoring
  • Lane-keep assist
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Surround-view camera
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Tyre pressure monitoring
  • Front and rear parking sensors

As with all new-generation Tritons currently, the GLX-R is available only as a dual-cab ute with a six-speed automatic transmission.

It uses the same engine as the rest of the range: a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder producing 150kW of power and 470Nm of torque.

The Triton lineup will grow in 2025, however, with Club Cab and cab-chassis models joining the range. In the meantime, the previous-generation Triton remains on sale in cab-chassis GLX guise with either single-cab, Club Cab or dual-cab bodies.

Mitsubishi has already priced the GLX+ Club Cab ute at $50,340 before on-road costs, though it isn’t due until late in the first half of 2025 alongside cab-chassis models.
