2020’s Ghost of Tsushima is often cited as one of the best action-adventure games of all time. Sucker Punch Productions did an exceptional job as the game was praised for its combat gameplay, story, characters, worldbuilding, and music. The franchise is all set to continue with Ghost of Yotei, which is a standalone sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, but rather than continuing the story of Jin Sakai, Ghost of Yotei features a brand-new protagonist named Atsu.

The game looks exciting but many fans have opposed the idea of getting rid of Jin Sakai. Yes, it would certainly be exciting to see more of Jin Sakai from the first game, but Ghost of Yotei is the right direction as Sucker Punch Productions isn’t limited to Jin Sakai. They can explore many different periods and protagonists, something that Ubisoft does with the Assassin’s Creed franchise.

Sucker Punch Productions has revealed that their upcoming game, Ghost of Yotei, would be an original story set centuries later from Ghost of Tsushima, with the only shared element being the idea of the Ghost. The game is a standalone sequel but the game focuses on a brand-new protagonist named Atsu.

The idea of introducing a completely new protagonist didn’t sit well with some fans as they hoped to see more of Jin Sakai in the sequel but Sucker Punch Productions may have made the right decision. It’s natural for Ghost of Yotei to get some hate right now but as more and more information comes forward, fans will realize that this is the perfect way of setting up the franchise.

With Jin Sakai, Sucker Punch Productions wouldn’t be able to go beyond his story. Yes, it would’ve worked for now, but if they work more on standalone sequels, they can explore many different periods and characters, making sure that they can create many exciting and unique games in the future.

This decision not only extends the life of the franchise but also makes sure that they don’t overdo Jin Sakai’s story. Creating a direct sequel to Ghost of Tsushima is a big task and it is certainly not possible to continue that story without criticism, after all, opinions are subjective.

Ghost of Yotei‘s announcement trailer was dropped recently and the game is set to release for the PlayStation 5 in 2025. The story centers around the theme of “underdog vengeance” and takes place around Mount Yōtei on Japan’s Hokkaido island in 1603. Players will play as Atsu, a female warrior who adopts the persona of “The Ghost.
