Triumphant Lions mark Mad Monday in style

The triumphant Brisbane Lions have swapped their team colours for fancy dress, taking to the streets in Mad Monday costumes after a thumping AFL grand final victory.

The Lions flogged their much-hyped Sydney rivals at the MCG by 60 points on Saturday, triggering celebrations that are expected to continue well into the week.

The team was spotted at an inner-Brisbane pub, wearing sometimes extravagant and sometimes confusing costumes.

Tom Doedee decided it’s never too early to get into the Christmas spirit, donning a summer Santa outfit.

Tall forward Joe Daniher was sporting a double-denim ensemble, while Reece Torrent and Luke Lloyd came as the Super Mario Bros.

Henry Smith and Carter Michael were dressed as the Bananas in Pyjamas, while Zac Bailey was clad in a full-body Spiderman suit.

Harris Andrews and Cam Rayner waltzed in with the premiership trophy, while Josh Dunkley, who played a key role in the grand final by blunting Sydney superstar Isaac Heeney, arrived on a skateboard.

On Sunday, the premiership side celebrated at Melbourne’s family day before flying home to Brisbane to be greeted by more than 6000 fans at their Brighton Homes Arena headquarters in Springfield as the sun set.

But Monday was for the team as they continued the long tradition of post-football season dress-up celebrations.

Brisbane’s Mad Monday kick-off was tame compared to headline-grabbing incidents from recent years, something grand final losers the Swans know all too well.

Sydney skipper Callum Mills was sidelined at the start of 2024 after badly injuring his left shoulder in a Mad Monday mishap, having come off second best while wrestling with teammate Jacob Konstanty.

Carlton prodigy Brendan Fevola wore a nightie with a sex toy protruding from his pants in 2008 and 2009, while in 2013 St Kilda players allegedly set a dwarf entertainer on fire.
