FromSoftware games have single-handedly pioneered the Soulslike genre and nurtured a generation of players to strive for self-improvement through discipline and skill. Most games require the gaming community to be strong and steadfast amidst the presence of powerful enemies and this is what the game developers intended. However, the storylines of each project can be a little too obvious and with the previous track record, fans might have guessed where future sequels will go next.

The gaming studio is renowned for its intense combat and gameplay, and director Hidetaka Miyazaki made some creative changes in the development of his recent project. The gaming community hopes to see more great games come out of the studio sooner rather than later.

The gaming community is pursuing great challenges in video games and FromSoftware has the drive to satisfy this thirst in spades. The Soulslike genre is not for the faint of heart, and players will likely feel discouraged rather than motivated, given the intense spike in difficulty from other games. However, the game developers wanted to give the players a fighting chance and added a few secret tricks like deflecting incoming enemy attacks in Elden Ring, perhaps more secrets have yet to be discovered in older games.

It is no secret that the Soulslike genre is renowned for its intense combat experience. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki developed the perfect formula from the early days of the company where he and his team would primarily focus on the gameplay first and the story as the second priority; however, Miyazaki wanted to spice up the experience for Elden Ring and reached out to George R. R. Martin to help him pen the lore of this new adventure. Some players have noticed a pattern in this genre and it is hard to deny that this sounds promising.

The plot of each new FromSoftware project often involves the themes of godhood, especially in Elden Ring where gods and demigods are being toyed around. Players will eventually come across these omnipotent beings and fight them to death, making up for a great and memorable video game experience. Martin came on board with the project to develop the lore and world-building, paired with the skills and expertise of the developers of Miyazaki’s eye for detail, it was a potent mix for a successful video game.

While most of the lore of each Soulslike game is highly convoluted making it a challenge for some players to get with the program, the ambitious nature of FromSoftware encourages the gaming community to use their imagination and get creative, especially while they are in the heat of battle. It may seem like the game developers are angry at the player base as they design powerful enemies to give them a firsthand experience of failure and grief but it is completely the opposite. Miyazaki refused to include any difficulty settings to prevent players from having different experiences, and his main objective was to teach the gaming community a valuable lesson of never backing down and always standing up.

The stories of Soulslike games often involve players exploring certain areas and fighting powerful enemies that will lead toward another fight. These challenges allow the player base to sharpen their skills and reaction time faster than usual to gain the upper hand against these overpowered enemies. Miyazaki is not a fan of sequels; however, the ground broken with Elden Ring could make him reconsider, especially with the revelation that smaller-scale FromSoftware games are in the works.

The game developers struck gold with this genre, and some projects are too good to be forgotten or passed on as a one-time thing. The gaming community, alongside Miyazaki, is still not over the lack of Bloodborne content and is clinging to every little leak or rumor about a remaster, spinoff title, or sequel which is highly unlikely given that Sony Interactive Entertainment has shown little to no interest in revisiting the franchise nor expanding it.

The fans who wrote the plot chart listed concepts introduced in each project other than gods and omnipotent beings. The game often ends with the main character defeating every foe or achieving a higher form of enlightenment allowing them to ascend to greater forms of existence like godhood and beyond. Perhaps the next major project will follow through the same ambitious themes.

FromSoftware has cracked the code on how to make a successful video game franchise and if the formula isn’t broken, there is no need to fix or adjust anything; however, this can be viewed as counterproductive. The gaming community has grown accustomed to what the traditional Soulslike game has in store and is comfortable with it but this will stop the game developers from breaking new ground. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki can find a fine balance to deliver a new experience while staying true to the studio’s core in the coming years.
