Swimmers from across the North West descended on Broome over the long weekend for the annual Kimberley Open Short Course swimming competition from September 21 to 23, but it was Broome’s own Jasper Barnett who stole the spotlight, shattering an incredible 15 records while winning nine gold medals and one silver.

Barnett, a rising star in the 12-year-old girls’ division, made waves by breaking multiple long-standing records, including the Kimberley Girls’ 12 years 100m breaststroke, which hadn’t been touched since 2000. She bested the previous mark by just under a second.

Barnett also broke the Kimberley 12-year-old girls’ 50m butterfly record by 976 milliseconds, the 100m backstroke by 957 milliseconds, and the 11 to 12-year-old girls’ 100m individual medley by a razor-thin margin of 2 milliseconds.

Her dominance continued in the 50m backstroke, where she knocked off 2.04 seconds, and the 100m freestyle, where she beat the previous time by 919 milliseconds.

Barnett’s prowess in the pool was further highlighted in the 100m butterfly, where she broke the record by 45 milliseconds, and in the 50m freestyle, where she shaved off 84 milliseconds from the previous record.

In addition to her Kimberley records, Barnett rewrote the All Comers record books, breaking the 12-year-old girls’ 100m breaststroke record by 911 milliseconds—an achievement that hadn’t been seen since 1999.

She also set new All Comers records in the 50m butterfly, backstroke, freestyle, and individual medley.

Some of these All Comers records had stood for over a decade, including the 100m backstroke, which had been untouched since 2008, and the 50m freestyle, which had held strong since 2011.

Jasper Barnett’s performance at the Kimberley Open has not only cemented her place as one of the top young swimmers in the region but also as a force to be reckoned with on a broader stage.
