It was a mainstay on Aussie TV screens for over a decade. And now Australia’s favourite travel show, The Great Outdoors, is returning to Seven after a 12-year hiatus.

And for one lucky presenter, who is joining the stacked line-up of travellers including Phil Burton, Teigan Nash, Kimberley Busteed, Lee Carseldine and Chris Parsons, it’s the realisation of a long-held dream.

“I grew up watching The Great Outdoors and still can’t quite believe I’ve now got one of the best gigs on TV as I share these incredibly unique travel destinations with our viewers,” says James Tobin, who is off to the US in this new series.

This season the team head to all sorts of incredible destinations, from the snow-covered mountains of North America, to the forests of Tasmania and our own wild and remote coastline.

We checked in with the Weekend Sunrise weather presenter to find out his favourite travel destinations — prepare to get jealous!

“I can thank Sunrise for my first trip to The Kimberley — and it was an experience that blew my mind. It’s such an awe-inspiring place, and you really get a sense of just how ancient this island continent of ours is.”

Lord Howe Island

“Lord Howe Island is this incredible (not so secret) gem off the coast of NSW. Tiny in size but immense in offerings, it’s as equally suited to an adventurous action-packed break as it is to a lazing-by-the-pool-with-a-cocktail type of holiday.”

“I love the snow, but I equally love the mountains in autumn, spring and summer. In winter, a day on the slopes, into a few drinks off the mountain, into dinner and a few games by the fire is a great day.”

The Black Forest, Germany

“Growing up with a German mum meant occasionally visiting our grandparents in Germany. They lived in a small village in the Black Forest, very picturesque and traditional. One of my missions on The Great Outdoors is to show Aussies just how incredible Germany is — Oktoberfest and beyond!”

Texas

“It was always on my list, but it was The Great Outdoors that finally got me there. The Lone Star State almost feels like its own country, and you get the sense most Texans wouldn’t mind if it was. They say everything is bigger in Texas and it’s hard to disagree . . . big skies, big trucks, big steaks!”

The Great Outdoors starts on October 5 at 7pm on Seven.
