A Shreveport police officer is dead after an off-duty car accident.

Shreveport Police Department stated in a Facebook post, “Please keep the men and women of the Shreveport Police Department in your prayers as we navigate a tragic event.”

Late Friday, the Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office identified the officer as Matthew Rhoden, 37.

According to the coroner’s office, the wreck happened around 2 p.m. at West 70th St. and Pines Rd. when Rhoden’s vehicle struck a van that pulled out in front of him.

Rhoden’s vehicle then veered into a vacant house and rolled over.

SPD said, “We ask for prayers for all those involved and their families during this difficult time.”
