People Have A Lot To Say About This GOP Lawmaker Seemingly Threatening To Fight Her Democrat Colleague, And As A Voter, I’m Embarrassed

The level of unseriousness in American politics today is astounding, and a clip on the House floor is going viral to prove it.

For those not caught up, Rep. Nancy Mace (R) recently challenged Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D) to a fight during a House Oversight Committee Meeting after seemingly misunderstanding an AAVE term that Rep. Crockett used.

While speaking on the House floor, Rep. Crockett seemingly accused Rep. Mace of pushing the transgender issue to gin up fear and fundraise.

“Somebody’s campaign coffers really are struggling right now, so she’s going to keep saying ‘trans, trans, trans’ so that people will feel threatened. And chile, listen…”

The word ‘Chile,” — an African-American Vernacular English term — is used by Black Americans when someone does something “seemingly questionable,” or it can sometimes be used as a filler word.

Definition of "chile": Pronounced like "child" without the "d". Used similarly to "wtf" when someone does something questionable

In the moment, Rep. Mace seemingly misunderstood the term “Chile,” taking it to literally mean “child.” “I am no child! Do not call me a child,” Rep. Mace shouted across the room. “Do not even start; I am a grown woman that is 47 years old. I have broken more glass ceilings than you ever will!” she continued, yelling over Rep. Crockett.

“Order, order!” the chairman said repeatedly, trying to calm the situation.

“If you want to take it outside, we can do that,” Rep. Mace added.

Yikes. Here’s what people are saying about this viral moment on the House floor.

“the leaders of this country are so embarrassing good lord,” one user wrote.

“has Nancy Mace just never talked to a Black woman before? ‘Chile’ is a very weird thing to freak out about. I don’t know about the rest of the country, but this is how many Black people talk in the South,” this user pointed out.

“This whole Nancy Mace/Jasmine Crockett beef is all because ‘chile’ doesn’t mean child. That’s both sad and hilarious,” this user agreed.

“I’m old enough to remember two weeks ago when Nancy Mace was wearing a sling because someone shook her hand,” this user wrote, referring to Nancy Mace wearing an arm sling after claiming she was “accosted” by a transperson, though witnesses claim it was a handshake.

One user pointed out the racial double standard: “Is Congresswoman Crockett would have told Congresswoman Mace to ‘take it outside’ we would have think pieces about her lack of decorum and how her conduct is beneath that of a member of Congress.”

Congresswoman Crockett took to her official Twitter account after the incident and wrote: “Chile…”

She then followed up with a longer explanation on her personal account, writing: “Please explain to me how the same damn Karen that called Cap Police on a child who shook her hand wanted to act like she wanted to fight me?!”

I’m sure we’re in for even more of these moments in the next four years.
