Netmarble’s upcoming release Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, based on the titular book series by George R.R. Martin and HBO show, will debut a closed beta later this month. Set to arrive on January 15th and last through to the 22nd in the US, Canada and select parts of Europe, applications are now open for Android!

While previous mobile adaptations of Game of Thrones have concentrated more on strategy and other genres more suited to the high-level intrigue of the series, Kingsroad puts you in the shoes of a single character. Ending up as heir to the obscure House Tyre through a series of bizarre incidents, you’ll travel the land of Westeros battling foes and winning prestige.

Certainly, a glance at the trailer looks to offer us a very Witcher-like experience. Third-person exploration and combat are joined by the opportunity to spec into three separate classes such as the Sellsword, Knight and Assassin. It all looks suitably impressive, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating after all.

Winter is coming (well it’s already here but you know what I mean)

Registration is open for the closed beta until January 12th, so hurry before it’s over! For my money, although Game of Thrones: Kingsroad does look impressive I’ve no doubt that it’ll also draw strong scrutiny. While the heyday of Game of Thrones pop-culture domination may be over, it still has a dedicated fanbase who’ve been waiting for an on-the-ground release like this.

That means monetisation and other aspects will likely prove to be a big issue. As will the long-term plan and support. But if Netmarble can pull through they may well deliver on the experience Game of Thrones fanatics have been craving.
