Aussie couple escorted off flight, charged over alleged drunken act

An Australian couple have been escorted off a domestic flight and charged after an alleged drunken incident, including the woman “grabbing and shaking” another passenger.

Airline staff called the Australian Federal Police for assistance after a couple on a December 29 flight from Hobart to Sydney allegedly caused a disturbance.

The couple — a 45-year-old man and 53-year-old woman — were allegedly intoxicated and drinking alcohol they brought with them on the plane.

It is further alleged the woman also grabbed and shook another passenger while they were exiting the toilet on board the plane.

The pair were escorted off the flight by AFP members and charged with one count each of failing to comply with safety instructions by cabin crew and consuming alcohol not provided by crew.

These offences carry a maximum penalty of $13,750.

The woman was also charged with assault, for which the maximum penalty is two years’ jail.

AFP Sergeant Luke Stockwell said more than 400 incidents relating to intoxicated individuals were recorded at major airports last year, and warned such behaviour is both disrespectful and a safety risk.

“We urge travellers to be mindful of their behaviour at airports these summer holidays – you don’t want to start the new year with a significant fine or worse, behind bars,” Mr Stockwell said.

“Bad behaviour at airports is not only disrespectful to other travellers, airport workers and airline staff, but it’s a safety risk and usually leads to more serious offences.

“The AFP is increasing patrols at all major airports during the holidays and will not tolerate dangerous, disruptive or abusive behaviour from travellers.”

The couple are set to front the Downing Centre Local Court on Monday.
