Southern Smash 2024: Retravision Warriors belt record score to claim title over Albany Finance fury

Retravision Warriors broke the shackles of tricky pitches and slow outfields to clinch the 2024 Southern Smash title, belting the highest final score in the tournament’s six-year history.

The Warriors poured on the runs with a final 20-over assault on Albany Finance Fury to post 7-167 in their brilliant 27-run grand final victory at Turf North on Monday, December 30.

Warriors’ Blair Walsh was named player of the match after he anchored their innings superbly with 69 runs from 55 with four fours and one six to help his side plunder 105 runs in the final 10 overs of their batting innings.

Former Albany and Districts star Nathan Crudeli (29) and Mt Barker captain Jeremy Wood (17) then provided crucial cameos smacking four maximums and two fours between each other to help their side to a more than defendable score.

A stellar half-century from Fury’s Simon Budge gave the chase a fair nudge, but after the under-19 Australian wicketkeeper-bat departed the required run rate became too difficult to match.

The Warriors ended Fury’s innings by taking 5-14 to start the title celebrations early before Fury finished 7-140.

After being tied with a win-loss record of 2-1, the Warriors snuck into the decider after edging out Arc Infrastructure Aces, who were spearheaded by player of the tournament Clint Hinchliffe.

Walsh crafted a well-calculated innings with smart running between the wickets alongside Tim Hale (15) before accelerating with Crudeli, Wood and Harry Broomhall (5) in the latter stages.

Crudeli’s cavalier 29 came from just 18 balls and included two fours and two sixes, while Wood cleared the rope twice in his 11-ball knock.

Warriors opener Viv Paver looked dangerous before an untimely hamstring injury sustained while running between the wickets curtailed his innings of 15 from 11 balls. He soon departed for a quickfire 14 and was unable to field or bowl due to the injury.

Fury’s Liam Want bowled tightly and snared 3-28 from four overs, off-spinner Adam Prowse was economical with 0-22 from four overs and Englishman Myles Davis (2-35) also played an important role.

In response, Fury made it through the powerplay without loss with openers Budge (61) and Garrick Morgan (13) scoring freely before Crudeli broke the partnership.

Young Collingwood Park leg spinner Jed Schwarzbach then stepped up in place of the injured Paver by claiming the enormous scalp of WA contracted player Teague Wyllie (3).

Australian under-19 all-rounder Luke Holt consolidated with Budge scoring 38 from 29 balls with two sixes and two fours to form a potentially match-defining 65-run third wicket stand.

But pacer Jack Camarda struck to claim the invaluable wicket of Budge and spark the Fury batting collapse.

Wood got among the action taking 3-26 from four overs while strike bowler Crudeli finished with 3-28 from four overs.

The Fury’s dominant opening day of the tournament was enough for them to qualify for the grand final, finishing first ahead of the Warriors, who just scraped through into the decider ahead of Arc Infrastructure Aces.

The Aces defeated the Fury in the last qualifying match of the tournament by five wickets courtesy of a classy unbeaten 77 from 58 balls from No.1 draft pick Clint Hinchliffe.

The Aces were 1-8 when Hinchliffe strolled to the crease before he belted eight fours to guide his side to a superb victory.

Despite Luke Holt’s classy 3-10 from four, the Aces chased the Fury’s 6-118 with one over to go.

The Fury had set a respectable total with Holt (46) and Broomehill’s Kyle Potter (32 not out) combining for a crucial 78-run fifth wicket stand.

The Warriors secured a strong 18-run win over Camtrans Bulldogs in their final pool match, which was enough to edge out the Aces for the last spot in the decider by the barest of margins — just 0.122 on net run rate.

Hale scored a crafty unbeaten 66 from just 58 balls as the eventual premiers posted 6-139 before restricting their opponents to just 6-121.

Jack Webster scored 38 for the Bulldogs while Oliver Davidson took 2-20 from four overs.

Southern Scorpions claimed the inaugural Southern Smash women’s title with a 2-1 win over Bunbury and Districts at Turf East on Monday.

After falling to 3-3 in their pursuit of 99, the Scorpions successfully chased down the score seven down with three overs left.

Scorpions’ Emma Dolan scored 34 from 37 and took 2-12 from four overs while Maddie Oakey took 3-3 from two overs for the Blue Swans.

Blue Swans’ Matilda Richings scored an unbeaten 54 from 61 deliveries and was also named player of the tournament.

The Blue Swans forced a decider after completing a nervy run chase earlier in the day.

They mowed down Scorpions’ 9-85 with just five balls to spare to win by two wickets.

Ritchings scored 27 not out to help guide her side to victory.

Scorpions were best served by captain Holly Pearce who took 3-17 from four overs.
