Major flooding struck parts of eastern Tennessee on Friday, September 27, as the Pigeon and French Broad rivers rose significantly and prompted multiple road closures.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (DoT) said all on- and off-ramps onto Interstate 40 were closed at Hartford, and posted this footage showing deep floodwaters surrounding buildings in Hartford and large debris floating by.

“Due to severe weather, including flooding and downed trees, travel between Tennessee and North Carolina is not advised at this time,” the DoT warned.

The Cocke County Emergency Management Agency said evacuations were expected along both rivers, and said the Newport Community Center in Newport, Tennessee, had been set up as a shelter. Credit: Tennessee DoT via Storyful
