How much snow and ice is Wichita expected to get? Here are updated numbers

Story has been updated to include information the National Weather Service released after 2:30 p.m. Friday.

The Wichita area’s first winter storm of the season is expected to be a doozy, bringing with it ice accumulation, snow and subzero wind chills.

The National Weather Service in Wichita released an updated weather advisory Friday showing Wichita has a higher chance of receiving more snow and ice than had been forecast in its Thursday afternoon advisory.

The worst of the storm is still expected to hit north and northeast of Wichita.

A “freezing drizzle” is expected to hit Wichita first, starting somewhere around 6 a.m. Saturday morning.

Salina, which is expected to see much more severe weather, will also have a freezing drizzle that will turn into freezing rain/sleet on Saturday night.

National Weather Service in Wichita provided these updates Friday afternoon.

Wichita’s weather will turn into a wintry mix overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning, when the greatest accumulations of ice are expected, the NWS said.

Wichita is expected to have between one-tenth and quarter-inch of ice accumulation, according to the NWS.

A swath from Emporia extending west to around Hutchinson and east into Missouri, is expected to see between a quarter to half inch of ice accumulation.

In Wichita, snow is expected to start around 6 a.m. Sunday and last until 6 p.m. that evening.

Wichita is forecast to see between three to six inches of snow. Salina will see between nine to 16 inches; Topeka is forecast between eight to 12 inches.

A strong north wind will ramp up Sunday as well. Wind gusts are forecast to reach a high around 43 mph about 3 p.m. Sunday in Wichita before starting to drop.

Then temperatures will start to drop as well. The wind chill in Wichita on Sunday morning is forecast to be 1 degree and -10 degrees Monday morning.

National Weather Service updated its Sunday and Monday wind chills on Friday afternoon, showing the temps are going to be even lower than expected earlier in the day.

Tuesday and Wednesday mornings are also expected to have a negative wind chill before starting to warm up. Wednesday is forecast to be sunny with a high around 24 degrees.

Based on the forecast, Botanica said it will end its seasonal Illuminations display one day early. Friday will now be the last day of the season.

Evergy said it is “planning and preparing for a potential multi-day effort to restore power” and has 1,000 line and vegetation contractors ready to join its crews if needed.

The Kansas Department of Transportation will not pretreat highways in the Wichita area because the forecast rain will wash that away, a spokesperson said.
