Real Reason One Feature Being “Reformed” in Elden Ring Nightreign is a Logical Masterstroke

The announcement of Elden Ring Nightreign has met with a huge wave of excitement and anticipation from fans. While Nightreign is a spin-off rather than a direct sequel, it does take various core elements that made Elden Ring such a captivating experience and refines them into a faster-paced multiplayer game.

In a recent interview, Junya Ishizaki, the director of Elden Ring Nightreign, revealed various insights about the game and how it will be presented to the players. One of the most notable changes he revealed was the removal of the messaging feature, which had become one of the most immersive and engaging aspects of its predecessor.

Elden Ring Nightreign is removing the messaging system

In Elden Ring, one of the standout features was the ability to leave messages for other players using an asynchronous network. These messages were often cryptic and were spread throughout the world, offering players hints, warnings, or even comedic distractions.

The messages were relayed via a ghost of other players visible in the environment, creating a unique experience. This simple act of reading someone else’s message made Elden Ring feel more alive, like a world where countless others were facing the same challenges.

While this became a known part of FromSoftware’s multiplayer design, Elden Ring: Nightreign is taking a completely different approach. In an interview (with IGN Japan) Ishizaki confirmed that while players can still see the ghosts of others, the ability to leave messages has been scrapped entirely.

You can still see the ghosts of other players, but the ability to leave messages has been removed.

He further explained that this is due to a change in the fundamental design of the new game. Nightreign is structured around 40-minute sessions.

Players enter and face challenges, and in many cases, these could lead to intense combat or a narrative turn. With such intense playtime, there simply isn’t enough time to leave a meaningful message.

This decision initially raised eyebrows in the gaming community, as the messaging system had become an iconic part. However, if we examine the reason, it is clear that removing it was a logical masterstroke, one that aligns with the design goals and immersive experience of Nightreign.

Developers are focusing on the core experience

Unlike the expansive open world, Nightreign is designed to be fast-paced, intense, and session-based. By going with this context, messages while enjoyable and useful in a slower-paced, exploration-heavy game, could easily become a distraction.

From the interview, it seems that another reason for the removal of messaging in Nightreign is the shift toward more direct forms of interaction. In many ways, the game is building upon the lessons learned from Elden Ring.

To take a one step forward with a more refined focus on co-op, fast-paced and dynamic environment. It makes sense that the messaging system is removed.

With Nightreign set for release in 2025 (though the exact date remains unconfirmed), fans are eager to dive into this new chapter. Nightreign is going to be a game that pushes the boundaries of what we expect from multiplayer and session-based action games.

In the end, as we await more details in the lead-up to its release, one thing is clear: the removal of the messaging system is just the beginning of the vast and deep transformation of FromSoft’s formula.
