Minecraft Creator Announces Spiritual Successor but Doesn’t Want to Do It Illegally

There is no doubt that Minecraft is arguably the most iconic gaming franchise of all time. The journey started in 2009 when its creator Markus “Notch” Persson grew the game, but later on, it went on to become a gaming giant when the original studio of the game Mojang was sold to Microsoft for a freaking $2.5 billion in 2014.

Since then, we haven’t heard anything from him regarding the game as he is not a part of Minecraft or Mojang anymore. However, there has been a strange announcement from the OG creator recently that has shaken the entire gaming fraternity.

Minecraft might be getting a “Spiritual Successor”

Out of nowhere, Notch has recently announced Minecraft 2 Although Microsoft owns Mojang Studios, the company that created Minecraft, and the Minecraft IP, they do not own the concept or idea of the game. According to a recent post on social media platform X, Persson is creating a spiritual successor to Minecraft, and nothing is stopping him from doing so.

I thought that maybe people ACTUALLY do want me to make another game that’s super similar to the first one, and I’m loving working on games again.

Notch spends his free time creating games, and a few days ago he started discussing upcoming projects on Twitter. The shocking revelation that Notch wants to create a spiritual successor to Minecraft was made during this round of tweets.

On January 1, Notch asked on Twitter if he should keep making his “traditional roguelike” or put it on hold and create “a spiritual successor thing to Minecraft.” He was concerned that his fans might not be interested in playing a game he had created in a different genre.

Honest and legitimate request for feedback for once:

The new game I’m passionately working on is currently set to be a traditional roguelike (i.e. ADOM, nethack, etc) mixed with a tile based first person dungeon crawler (ie Legend of Grimrock (esp 2), Eye of the Beholder)

In a subsequent tweet, Notch clarified that he is “100% serious about all that,” which is essentially the first time he has ever made such an overt declaration that he is interested in creating another game in the vein of Minecraft.

Minecraft 2 is unlikely to get any support

Compared to 2009, Notch has changed significantly in the gaming industry. First of all, Notch has been embroiled in a number of scandals because of remarks he has made about LGBTQ+ individuals, especially transgender people.

He has even gone so far as to say that those who oppose the concept of a Heterosexual Pride Day “deserve to be shot.” Because of his remarks on social media, Microsoft even barred him (via Variety) from the game’s tenth-anniversary celebration.

A sizable portion of the original game’s fan base would already be against any prospective successor because of the controversies that have caused many Minecraft fans to turn against the game’s creator over the years. The fact that Minecraft is so enormous—large enough to warrant a live-action version starring Jack Black, at the very least—means that it won’t be overthrown anytime soon.

However, if you are not bothered by Notch’s comments and are excited about Minecraft 2, you have to get a knack for the first game for sure. That is why, here is a beginner’s guide for the first game so that your transition to the successor becomes a lot smoother.

We will also have to wait to see if Notch fulfills that commitment. Declaring your desire to create Minecraft 2 is fine, but working alone as a solo developer is challenging and time-consuming.
