Southern California police officer accidentally runs over homeless woman

(KTLA) – A homeless woman who was lying on the ground in a Ventura park was accidentally run over by a police officer on New Year’s Day, authorities confirmed to the Ventura County Star newspaper.

The incident happened around 10 a.m. when, according to Cmdr. Sarah Heard, the officer was driving his patrol vehicle through Plaza Park after making an unrelated arrest.

He was attempting to drive around the woman’s blanket when he heard her suddenly scream out, Heard said. He had run over one of her legs.

“The officer was very apologetic,” Heard told the Star.

The newspaper reported that the woman was treated for a minor injury at Ventura County Medical Center and released later in the day.

It is unclear if the officer will face disciplinary action.
