German Christmas market attack injury toll rises to 299

The number of people injured in the attack on a Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg two weeks ago has risen to 299 from the previously reported 235, the state Interior Ministry says.

The new figure includes injured people who had previously not been recorded or only reported to the authorities in the aftermath of the attack.

Twelve of those injured are foreigners or have dual citizenship, it said.

On December 20, a 50-year-old man drove his car into the Christmas market on a central square in the central German city, the capital of the state of Saxony-Anhalt.

Five people died in the attack.

The driver, a Saudi citizen only identified as Taleb A in line with Germany’s strict privacy laws, had previously come to the attention of the German security authorities.

He is in custody as investigations proceed.
