Extreme Storm Surge From Hurricane Helene Shuts Down Tampa Bridges

Bridges in Tampa, Florida were closed due to high winds and storm surge as Hurricane Helene intensified to an extremely dangerous Category 4 storm on Thursday, September 26.

Florida Highway Patrol shared this video of storm gusts battering cars on the Howard Frankland Bridge and said motorists should stay off the highways.

Flooding was affecting multiple roads across the Tampa area on Thursday, according to the Tampa Police Department.

Hurricane Helene was sitting 120 miles (195 kilometers) west of Tampa at 6:20 pm on Thursday and maximum sustained winds had increased to 130 mph according to the National Hurricane Center. Credit: Florida Highway Patrol via Storyful
