When Manchester music maverick and Factory Records founder Tony Wilson told Liverpudlian synth-pop duo Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark they were the “future of pop” in the late 70s, they told him to “sod off”.

“We’re experimental, we’re not pop music,” Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys informed Wilson, who added that he’d like to release their debut single, Electricity.
