Cranbrook bushfire: Authorities advise residents to take shelter as bushfire takes hold

Authorities have told residents in the Shire of Cranbrook it is too late to leave as a bushfire takes hold in the area.

Residents in Cranbrook and Tenterden, about 94km north of Albany, have been advised to take shelter after evacuation routes were impacted by an inferno that sparked just after 3pm.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services issued an emergency warning less than an hour later for people in the area bounded by Albany Highway, Ronaldshaw Road, Cranbrook Road and Newton Road in Cranbrook and Tenterden.

“You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive. There is a threat to lives and homes,” the warning said.

“It is too late to leave. Fire has impacted evacuation routes and leaving now will put your life in danger.”

A DFES spokeswoman said career and volunteer firefighters were battling the blaze, with more crews headed to the scene.

It is understood the fire is west of the Cranbrook townsite but that the blaze is headed in the town’s direction.
