Newly released police video shows deadly altercation involving machete-wielding suspect in Gary

GARY, Ind. — Authorities in Gary, Indiana, released new videos on Friday that captured a deadly altercation with a suspect during an undercover sting operation.

The operation, which unfolded around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, targeted a person who officers believed was responsible for a rash of armed robberies during fake social media marketplace sales.

Officers shared video captured by a drone that was monitoring the sting from overhead as well as body camera video used by the undercover officer.

In the videos, the undercover officer can be seen approaching the suspect, before asking to view the product that was for sale.

The two walk to a nearby yard before the situation appears to escalate as the suspect can be seen pulling out a machete-style blade before he swings it in the officer’s direction.

The officer then narrowly dodges the blade as other members of the team conducting the sting operation step in to help.

During Wednesday’s news conference, Gary police officials said the suspect continued his violent behavior even after authorities stepped in and that is when one of the officers opened fire, hitting and injuring the suspect.

Following the shooting, the suspect was taken into custody and taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.

The medical examiner has since identified the man as 21-year-old Shahaud Richmond.

The undercover officer involved in the sting, a 32-year veteran of the force, suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the incident.

Authorities said the sting was organized after authorities narrowed down a suspect wanted in connection with the robberies back in October. They were later able to set up a purchase with the suspect.
