Officials reported an explosion at a manufacturing plant on Payne Street in the Clifton neighborhood Tuesday afternoon.

Soon after, Louisville Metro Emergency Services issued a shelter-in-place order within a 1-mile radius of the explosion. It was lifted at approximately 4:30 p.m.

The radius included several populous areas of Louisville, including parts of Baxter Avenue, Bardstown Road and Frankfort Avenue.

Some residents in Louisville’s Clifton, Irish Hill, Cherokee Triangle, Original Highlands and Butchertown neighborhoods were part of the shelter-in-place. Mutliple schools were within the radius, including Breckinridge-Franklin Elementary.

Students at Breckinridge-Franklin and Lincoln Elementary Performing Arts School sheltered in place but were given the all clear to dismiss shortly before 4 p.m., The Courier Journal reported.
