Overwatch 2 is the latest live service game to give fans a trip down memory lane by launching a throwback mode.

Blizzard has announced Overwatch: Classic, which is billed as a series of nostalgia-inducing events that take players back to the game’s early days.

Featuring original heroes, abilities and maps in the classic 6v6 team-based format, the first such event will run from November 12 to December 2.

“Each Overwatch: Classic event will feature heroes and balance from popular moments in the game’s history, ranging from the fast paced and frantic gameplay of the 2017 Moth Meta to the triple-tank, triple-support style of ‘Goats’, Blizzard said.

“In the first Overwatch: Classic event, we’re taking it all the way back to the original 1.0 release from May 2016, which includes many abilities that haven’t been seen for years and all the chaotic gameplay from that era.”

Players will battle on the 12 original Overwatch maps across launch game modes Assault, Escort, Hybrid and Control.

However, the Overwatch: Classic maps will appear as they do in other Overwatch 2 game modes.

“This includes major reworks for Dorado, Numbani, Route 66, and Watchpoint: Gibraltar,” Blizzard said. “Things like match timing and how elevator platforms work will still be the same as they appear in Overwatch 2 game modes.”

Last November, tens of millions of players flocked to Fortnite to check out Fortnite OG, which took Epic’s game back to different phases of Chapter 1.

Apex Legends Season 23: From the Rift launched last week with a new mode that recreates the battle royale’s launch state from 2019.

Blizzard could announce a remastered version of Warcraft 2 during a special anniversary stream on November 13.

The Warcraft 30th Anniversary Direct presentation is billed as an “online celebration across World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, and Warcraft Rumble”.
